Check out Nukeproof rider Alastair MacLennan's report of the No Fuss Events Endurance Dowhill at Fort William.
One of my favourite events of the year is the Endurance Downhill Race at Fort William.
This years format changed slightly from previous years and the winner was going to be the first person to finish 15 descents, simple!
The main contenders were going to be Ben Cathro, James Shirley, Gary Forrest and Rob jarman, all hard men to beat.
A Le mans style start was followed by a mile long slog around and up a fire road before dropping onto the downhill track at the big wall ride and continuing down to the gondola station. From here we were uplifted to the top and started the process of 15 descents.
I started my first descent in around 8th spot which I was happy with and instantly picked off a few riders on the first half of the track. By the 3rd run I moved into 4th spot with the leaders just 2 gondolas ahead and noticed I had a couple of broken spokes and had many hanging loose. From here on in I had to spend time tightening them most laps letting the leaders move ahead. I didnt think the wheel would last but every lap down it still seemed to be turning and not wanting to give in. I had moved into 3rd spot by lap 8 and was putting in good times but was falling further behind leader james Shirley and 2nd place man Rob Jarman because of my pit stops but was happy to be still in the running.
The next few laps passed quickly and lap 15 soon came arround and I held onto my 3rd place overall with Rob Jarman (Hope Technology Ltd) coming 2nd and young James Shirley (The Cyclejersey/Orange) getting a well deserved win.
Overall it was a great event run by the enthusiastic team at No Fuss. The marshalls on the hill all day were the cheeriest I had ever come accross and there was great encouragement and banter from them all day.
I put in good average times and managed to get 7 out of 15 fastest descents of the day so was happy at that.
