“Sandra Rubesam- World Cup Rd.1”
Fresh from a week with the Nukeproof team in Barcelona shooting photos for the new Nukeproof women’s ride wear line, it was straight to my first race of the season In Maribor for the IXS European Downhill. Maribor is an amazing track in the Pohorje forest. Super High speed, rocky and with big jumps, it was perfect preparation for the first world cup. Many of the top teams and riders were also here so it was like a mini World cup. My Seeding time left for a lot of improvements and 8th overall was ok, considering the quality of the competition, but I would like to improve on this for Round 2.
I met up and travelled with Vali Höll (SRAM team rider) and her Dad to their home in Saalbach/ Austria, to spend two days until we would hit the road to Croatia for the first World Cup. The island Lošinj in the Adriatic Sea is one of the sunniest places in Europe and lived up to one’s repuatation. A beautiful sunset and crystal blue water welcomed us warmly. We had one day leisure-time and decided to do a boat trip to discover more of this beautiful landscape and enjoy the sun.
Holiday feelings vanished after track walk, and the brutality of the fist World Cup course set in. The track was short but you needed 100% concentration as the rocks made picking a line and flow very difficult. Practise came and went so quickly and I still didn’t have all my lines dialled but with only 15 spaces in finals I was determined to qualify.
A sold run on my Nukeproof Pulse put me in 12th place in qualifying, I knew I had more speed, but was so happy to make the finals. For Sundays finals, i managed to get a couple of good practise runs in and I was feeling more confident. However I didn’t get the race run I wanted though, a few small mistakes in the rocks caused me to loose my momentum and on such a short track it was difficult to make up the time. In the end I finished 13th overall and so go to Fort William with the luck 13 number. Congratulations to my travel partner Vali Hole for winning the Juniors race. The trip was amazing though and the island was simply beautiful, such a nice venue and a worthy track, I sure will come back!
