After a great Team effort at Afan Forest, team bikeyard/nukeproof packed up and headed for round 2 of the UCI World Cup in Fort William. After a big road trip there we jumped in the van and drove down to the site to check out the newly built 4x track which has had a lot of work done to it in preparation for the race and what a track it was!
This year the track had been designed with a bit more thought both for the riders and spectators by reducing the amount of pedalling which made racing a lot closer allowing for more moves to be made in each Moto and more exiting for the big crowds fort William always pulls in.
After a few days of practice Nathan and Billy were looking good on the course and were even looking up there with the big guns picking and choosing the lines they thought would be the best and fastest for qualifying as you only get one chance so in my eyes it was do or die or as some people put it if in doubt go flat out!
Qualifying was on the Friday night after practice with the top 64 riders going through, and this year it was tough seeing a total entry field of 89 of which 33 were from the UK so its good to see the sport is growing but also made it hard to get through as the standard of riders was top notch.
Billy Cheetham (seen here in moto with Lukas Mechura) was the first up to qualify with a great run until the rocks where he unclipped and nearly had a massive off luckily qualifying in 44th which was a great result for his debut world cup.
Nathan Parsons (below) was next in line to step it up for qualifying again with a great run until the rocks where he punctured but his big calves and winter training stormed him to the line to qualify in a respectable 55th.
Saturday night was the 4x race with Billy in moto 8, Billy got third pick of the gate and chose to be in lane 3, the moto included Lucas Mechura Quentin derbier and A.Gray, Billy had a good gate and was in 2nd into the first corner where he got snarled up and sandwiched between everyone , pushing him back to 3rd where he battled hard to pass but just couldn’t find his way through.
Nathan was in moto 12 and also had a hard moto against some of the best 4x riders in the industry, Nathan didn’t get his usual snap in the gate making it hard for him to catch up but to be fair he had a good go at getting past, but again like Billy just couldn’t find a gap to pass also seeing Nath drop out to watch from the side lines.
Thanks to all the guys who made the big trip to watch and all the support from the guys at Nukeproof and hotlines that made it possible to get there and race this year!
