Chances are you’ve seen the results – but it was a good weekend for the Wideopenmag team this weekend @ Combe Sydenham BDS Round 1. A tough weekend – but a good one!
Despite Jay and Rich both nursing illness and injury and the track being an absolute nightmare the team came out of the gate fighting.
Rich seeded 4th fastest and landed 7th place overall, in a stacked elite field that included Sam Hill and Gee Atherton. He’s over the moon and is taking this as a big boost that he’s over the worst of the sprained Achilles that he pick up in March when training with RoostDH.
Our newest addition to the team Laurie Greenland had an unlucky run crashing twice … but crossed the line in 3rd place in youth! He’s frustrated at what he could have done if he’d stayed on but buzzing for Fort William. Amazingly, this is his first season on a proper downhill bike and he’s loving the boost his Nukeproof Pulse is giving him. Expect big things from him!
Unlucky for Jay Williamson – he crashed out doubling up a line he’d been practicing all weekend and scored a DNF. He’s frustrated that his first elite National didn’t go better but is excited to be racing and looking forward to another chance in a few weeks. With a chest problem the focus for him is on rest, rehab and getting fit for the Fort.
We’ve also doubled the resources we’ve got to support the riders this year. Team mechanic Chaz Curry is now joined by TFTuned suspension expert Oscar Newton-Mason who will make sure the team’s bikes are set up to perfection. There were no major techncial issues this weekend so their job was mostly lashing the bikes with Fenwicks to keep them clean and mud-free.
Thanks to all of you for the amazing support this year and for getting these guys on the best set up that they could possibly want. We had all the Fox and Five Ten race kit that we could want, a great choice of Conti Tyres and everything ran pretty smoothly. It was a wet, filthy, muddy weekend and we had everything we needed to get stuck in and have fun doing it.
You can see Laurie on track in this POV video shot on his Drift HDGhost:
Our race video will be out today too!
